WvW Overview and General Strategies
World versus World: Resource Camps, Towers and Keeps General Strategies
When in the Player versus Players realm, the main goal is to control as many parts of the entire map as possible. To do this you must attack, defeat and hold resource camps, towers and keeps around the whole world. Each location has a number of NPC’s and a “boss” that protects the capture point, all of which will try to kill you. Think of it like a fantasy story. You are the white knight on a shining horse, the capture point is the princess that you want to kiss (And maybe more…) and the defending champion Npc is the dragon that will spare no moment of hesitation to turn you into a flaming piece of meat (Or vegetable for all you sylvari players and vegans out their). All of this is rather easy if you follow my advice, since you only have to do half of the hard stuff. The easier part is holding the point, but getting there is a whole different story.
To summarize what I previously said, I will say it in a couple of brief words: break through defense –>Kill Npc’s –>Defeat the Points and top Npc. Some may think that you have to have an organized guild for something like this with plans and Ventrilo/TeamSpeak/mumble or whatever people use nowadays to communicate. To this I immediately disagree. The makers of Guild Wars 2 put in the function of the crossed swords on the WvW map for a reason. They show the location of the current, most intense fights occurring. Doing player versus player is as simple as you showing up there and assisting fellow team members even if you don’t know each other. If people group together and work as a team, not only will you be able to accomplish a lot but you will have the time of your life. So without a further moment wasted, let us begin!
A primary point that your team will want to control is a Resource camp. It is the weakest of all 3 points and a team of 5-6 people minimum can take the location if there are only the Npc’s and 2-3 players. These points send supplies to the two larger structures, so often the main purpose of taking these camps are to starve out larger points as they run out of supplies. I advise that if you are traveling in a small pack with only a couple of people, and come across one of these camps but it is well fortified with upgrades then don’t bother.
When taking these points you want it to be quick and easy because there are larger more important locations around the map you need to be at for sure. A head on assault with strong bombardment plus flanking should be an easy task for some of even the most inexperienced players.
Towers have a wall around for protection and usually have a gate that others must break through. These points are easier than resource camps to take but not nearly as hard as keeps. To take this, you will need roughly twice what you would need for resource camps, and you definitely will want to have a flame ram. Once you have all of that you’re ready to PWN DEM NUBZ.
Firstly you want to take out any Oil that is positioned above since this is something many people often forget, than later regret (it rhymes!). Once there is no threat of burning liquids pouring on you from above, secure the entrance to ensure that no one can get into the keep to bring supplies to construct more weaponry. At that point, fire away at the gate with your ram followed by fellow team member’s attacks’. If that fails and you are still intent on taking the point, plop down a trebuchet some distance away and keep constant pressure on the gate until it is broken down. You don’t always have to use Siege weapons but it is highly recommended because they deal a much larger amount of damage against gates in comparison to a single player (obviously, as they are bigger, and definitely more BAMF). If you have the time to sit there with a small group of people and keep chopping away at that gate, be my guest.
When approaching this monster of a structure, be prepared for anything. Without a doubt, Keeps are where the most action occurs. Since these capture points are so large, large scale parties are needed to bash their way inside. To take these locations you will need a lot of people, siege weapons and hopefully a general idea or plan that everyone knows.
A Keep consists of an outer wall that has many spots in which you can place a siege weapon and then an inner wall before you reach the Keep Champion. Luckily for players, there are multiple entrances into the keep so numerous tactics, and strategies can be applied.
So generally when starting an assault on a Keep, a good player will know that they must have control over all resource camps around so that starvation takes its toll. Siege weapons are what often interrupt you breaking that gate, and for that machine to be made there must be supplies. In simpler times, denying the foes access to supplies is extremely crucial for the capture of the keep. Again, for people who want to take Keeps, make sure you have a heavy arsenal under your sleeve unless you plan on sleeping for some time.
As I close my topic, there are a couple of things I want to make sure you remember because these points are the key to your success:
-Always be prepared to set up Siege weapons no matter where you are because these will always turn the tides of battle
-Never leave a fellow team member behind. Each person can contribute to damage output, and often just a single person can change everything.
-Never get caught in AoE attacks, because the second you get caught in that quicksand it’s the end of you.
There are more specific details that I could cover, but all the general knowledge and strategies are covered. Have fun, and DON’T get F*cked by dem nubz
